A collegue of mine discovered an excellent diagram on MSDN which describes the lifecycle of a WCF message when it reaches the host. The page describes how to extend dispatchers, which is kind of advanced scenario, but the diagram is very usefull to understand how the layers of WCF interact with each other and participate in the handling of a request.
