About the support of Enterprise Library

Hi all,

I get plenty of questions regarding the Microsoft Support policy for the Enterprise library. This is quite normal and to be expected I'd say. So, here is the answer:

Enterprise library aims at being a guidance to assist developers with common Enterprise development challenges. It aims at being shared, used and extended by our vast community of developers (who can do that on GotDotNet). It is, however, NOT to be considered as a Microsoft product in any way.

More specifically, as far as support is concerned, Enterprise Library is considered as user-written code and is thus delivered "as-is". Of course, you can obtain support from Microsoft in a way that is completely identical with the way you would obtain support for your own code. There is also an online community so that users of Enterprise Library can help each other the with the matter. This community can be found at this location on GotDotNet.

It's also very important to understand that Enterprise Library comes with Extensibility points specifically designed for our customers to extend the functionality according to their desires. This way, you have the best chance to be and stay aligned with the evolution Microsoft and our developers' community will apply. If you do a more fundamental change (out of the extensibility points), the risk is higher that any change or fix delivered by the Community will not be applicable to your code.

Finally, Enterprise Library v2.0 (targetted at .NET 2.0) will normally be released by the end of this year.

Don't forget about the support policy of Microsoft. It says that, even if you make the choice for .NET Framework 1.1 and Enterprise Library V1 today, this choice will remain valid and supported up until September 2010. As far as Windows 2003 is concerned, the support for some version goes up until 2013.
