It's been a while since I've posted something, and as you can see, this post comes from a different blog engine! So, here's the story: I have my own domain - malone.gr. I've had it since 2001 (thanks wayback - I didn't remember that!). I've always hosted it @ parcom.net and I've been very pleased with both their services and their pricing. A couple of weeks ago, I received a notification that my account there was expiring (I had prepaid for something like 3 or 4 years, so I had forgotten about it!) and I started

You'll have to wait a little longer before you can do this, but it is definitely worth the wait! Along with the final release of Visual Studio 2008, Microsoft will also make available the source code to much of the .NET Framework Libraries, under the Microsoft Reference License. This means that you will be able to browse and view the source code of the following libraries: Base Class Libraries (System namespace, IO, Text, Collections, CodeDom, Regular Expressions, etc), ASP.NET, WinForms and WPF. More libraries

A bit of a strong statement, but I think it fairly describes the transformation that is happening as we speak. A week ago we announced a major update to Live Search, and it's really a quantum leap forward from the "old" version. Here are a few things I know are different: Relevance : This (in my opinion) was our No. 1 pain, compared to other search engines. There's nothing more annoying or time-wasting than getting irrelevant results, and so a lot of effort and innovation was poured into this. The Live Search

So, on Saturday I was trying to find out where I need to drive my wife to for Sunday's elections (she was responsible for a "voting department" - if that's what they're called in English). She gave me the address and looked it up on the local mapping sites - it was quite easy to locate. Then I wanted to see aerial imagery, so I went to Google Maps, because in all honesty, their imagery of Athens used to be more recent. Here's the school I had to drive my wife to, in Google Maps: Then I was curious to see what

First piece of great news is that we just released Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2008. There are a lot of great and cool things in VS2008 - here are a few I particularly like: With the introduction of Language Integrated Query (LINQ), you can now deal with data of all types with a consistent approach and perform data access with new data designers. LINQ makes data access easier for developers through a set of extensions to the C# and Visual Basic programming languages as well as the Microsoft .NET Framework. These

I had seen one of these episodes in the past (the 1st one here) and thought it was hillarious, but I wasn't aware of the other two, or the site that goes along with the episodes! This stuff is funny (even though it's produced by a competitor!). Enjoy! "SOA this. SOA that" "ROI of the Beholder" "Focus Pocus"

(from Richard Turner ) The Information Card Logo (*NOT* the CardSpace Logo!) Ever since announcing Windows CardSpace and introducing the world to the benefits of Information Cards, we’ve been asked repeatedly when there would be a logo or icon that could be used by sites and applications that accept Information Cards. Until now, there hasn’t been… We’re delighted to announce the immediate availability of the Information Card Logo. You’re free to use this logo (in accordance with the accompanying guidelines)

I'm a big fan of Office Development (and soon, you will be too!), so I was thrilled to see us release this: The Microsoft Office Interactive Developer Map is a WPF application that helps developers visualize the different programs, servers, services, and tools that will help them build solutions. It allows them to drill down to each product and technology and learn about new features, objects, Web services, namespaces, and schemas required to extend Microsoft Office and build custom Office Business Applications

Another question I keep getting when I present VSTS and TFS is how it relates to Project Server (integration with Project Professional is out-of-the-box functionality for VSTS). Once again, I've been saved by the web: We just announced a Project Server 2007 - TFS Connector ! The connector integrates the data across VSTS and the Project Server and helps synchronize the tasks (work items) between the two applications. It also gives control over governing the activities between the two by providing the Approve/Deny

Surface computing at Microsoft is an outgrowth of a collaborative effort between the Microsoft Hardware and Microsoft Research teams, which were struck by the opportunity to create technology that would bridge the physical and virtual worlds. What started as a high-level concept grew into a prototype and evolved to today’s market-ready product that will transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live. It’s a major advancement that moves beyond the traditional user interface to a more natural way of interacting

Architecture 101 (Mohammad, May 24) http://msevents.microsoft.com/cui/eventdetail.aspx?EventID=1032338971&culture=en-CA Architecture is the balance between art and engineering; it requires a certain mindset and approach to solving problems. Architects often function as a bridge between the business users and development groups and are increasingly being recognized as a critical community within organizations. Becoming an Architect can often translate in to an elevated status from a career stage perspective

So, like I wrote in my previous "Day 1" post, Silverlight was the main focus of the keynote, and MIX07 altogether. I was going to write some more about it, but I read this blog post @ TechCrunch, that began like this (copied from the post): The announcements around Microsoft’s new Silverlight platform yesterday were important to anyone who is thinking about where the web will evolve. For those of us watching the demos at the Mix conference the immediate importance of it was apparent - Silverlight will be the

Wow - what a day! The main event of the first day was, of course, the keynote session by Ray Ozzie and Scott Guthrie. The main topic of the keynote (and the entire MIX07 event, I would say) is Silverlight . I think I see a pattern here - the most important/ground-breaking/impressive products we build, always get names made up of two words: SharePoint & Silverlight are the ones I have in mind right now... Instead of taking notes during the keynote in order to remember all the stuff in order to post it in

So, here we are, one day before the real thing begins! The day starts off with some pre-conf sessions arranged by the EMEA@MIX team. We get a barrage of WPF demos (some really cool and impressive stuff, including an application for golfers, one for a fashion channel and one for the London Underground – Panos has more details ), followed by brunch (good thing, cause everyone was hungry!). We then get a nice session on U ser e X perience, with big focus on SilverLight , followed by a session on Windows Live! and

We finally arrived in Las Vegas about 6 hours ago (21:30-ish local time). By the time we got our suitcases, hopped on the MIX07 bus that drove us to the hotel and checked in, it was 23:30! The hotel, by the way, is very impressive. First of all, it's huge ! All of the rooms are suites (around 70m 2 each) and it's got a ton of stuff inside, from a huge casino, to a Madame Tussaud museum, a number of shows, the halls where MIX07 will take place and a ton of other stuff. You probably need about 20 mins to walk

A couple of weeks ago, Panos found out that IBM was hosting an event on SOA and forwarded it to me. I thought it would be interesting to see what IBM has to say on the subject, so I registered, and went. Overall, the event was well organized (apart from a few sound problems they had in the beginning). The schedule was almost on track (for Greek standards, I mean!) and the food was great! I knew quite a few of the attendees there. In fact, one of them said " I think Patrick knows more people here than IBM does!

This Saturday is going to be tough. We're leaving for MIX07 and I just calculated exactly how long our flight will be. Here it is, for your personal viewing pleasure: Yes, that's right! Twenty three hours and thirty one minutes. I don't think I've ever done that before! After we recover from this flight, Panos and myself are going to be blogging like crazy from there, so get ready! We're taking along digital cameras and camcorders, as well as our laptops and PDAs. We've got an account on Soapbox for our videos,

You're sitting in an airport, patiently waiting for your flight to board and, all of a sudden, Nick Skyscrapr , the famous enterprise architect sits right next to you. Being extremely friendly, he introduces himself to you and asks you what you do – so you say "I… well… I am an architect". "Perfect", he says, "Let's talk SOA!" Are you ready for this discussion? Do you have an opinion? Do you know who the players in the SOA field are? Are you sure you know who the players are? ;) Macehiter Ward-Dutton , a specialist

Not really related to VSTS or any other Microsoft technologies, I recently found out about a company called Steorn , who claim that their technology, " Orbo ", can produce energy that doesn't need any external sources , produces no emissions and does so indefinitely . This is the sort of thing that makes you say "yeah, right – you missed April fools by 12 days", as it violates the first law of thermodynamics , but these guys are serious about it. As you might expect, the scientific community is very skeptical

In the next edition of Visual Studio, codenamed "Orcas", the unit testing functionality, currently available only with the Team Editions of the product, will be available in the Professional edition as well. Creating and running database unit tests will remain in the Team Editions. Doing something like this makes sense, once you understand our long-term strategy for Visual Studio Team System. The idea is simple: we will keep adding value to all our Visual Studio editions in the years to come. Some of the functionality,
