Just noticed a nice little touch by Microsoft at Zune player when running on Windows 7. When you move the mouse cursor over the running Zune application button on the taskbar you see a mini-player in the preview window that pops up. It even has a “heart” button there to rate the current song as [...]...

So, you just updated your beautiful Windows Phone device with Mango and you want to create a custom ringtone. Well, you can use any music file you want, if it fits the following requirements 39 seconds or shorter smaller than 1 megabyte (MB) saved in MP3 or WMA format not copy-protected (i.e. DRM free) Of course, your favorite songs are over 39 seconds. I found this great online service (no need to download anything to your PC) to cut an mp3 file. It’s called “MP3 cut” and it’s URL is http://mp3cut.net/ (however, you can use any online or offline software you wish) Let’s check the procedure. 1. First, you select to upload your favorite mp3 file 2. After a few minutes (even more, if your song is lengthy) you will presented with the following screen 3. Simply select the part of the song you want (you can even preview it!) and… 4. Click Split and Download! 5. Download, save the file and open Zune. It’s time to add the file to your collection (you can use a simple drag and drop operation to accomplish that). When...

Today I had the pleasure to present at Elearning Expo 2011, the premium conference/exhibition for e-learning in Greece. I presented at a session titled "Interactive Games" and the presentation was about the game I have codeveloped with Anlock Ltd, "First Words: Learning Animals" . People really liked our game and wished us good luck! Worth to mention here is that Greek and Spanish version will hit the Windows Phone marketplace in a few days, whereas "Vehicles" version is under heavy development! Check the presentation on slideshare here http://www.slideshare.net/dt008/first-words-learning-animals-at-elearning-expo-2011 Διαβάστε περισσότερα »...

[This is a guest post from George Karavias of Anlock Ltd. creators of the Windows Phone 7 educational game First Words: Learning Animals ] So you’ve gotten over the hoopla of Geotrust and you have been registered as a Windows Phone developer. You are anxious to start submitting your applications. Hoping that Nokia and Microsoft get it together in the meantime and start selling smartphones, so the money starts rolling in! One thing is left though, filling out your “payout setup” … And that is when you come across some rather unclear and quite disturbing “Certification Instructions” about contacting the IRS and getting a US Taxpayer Identification Number. Otherwise you are subject to an automatic 30% US tax withholding, say what? 30%?, US Taxing? Why? Harsh truth is that if you are not based in the US and if you do not figure out the “Certifications Instructions”, Microsoft is going to withhold 30% of your sales, on top of the 30% commission to give to the IRS in the US. Fear not, we have been through it successfully...

Windows 7 has kept the taskbar tray from previous versions of Windows, but is providing a different means of managing which icons always show up and when (e.g. can set a specific icon to show up only if they have notifications, or even to never show up on the tray). When you press the “up” [...]...

You probably know already that on Windows 7 you can right click icons for executing tasks (applications) on the taskbar and select to Pin them there. You must have also noticed that Windows 7 aware applications show common tasks there, while Windows also shows recent files opened by some application even at cases where the [...]...

Did you know that everything you design in a LightSwitch application (tables, screens, queries etc) is stored in a file called ApplicationDefinition.lsml ? LSML extension stands for the title of the post…no, I’m kidding of course. It stands for LightSwitch Markup Language. This file can be found in the folder <Project Path>\<Project Name>\ Data. Working in Logical View this is file is not visible (no files are visible in this view either way). Turning to File View you can see links to this file in all three projects Client, Common and Server . Notice they are links. The original file is not included directly in any project. The reason there is only one file and all projects have link to it, is that it’s common to all of them and any change made to it should be available simultaneously to all projects. The reason it’s not included to any project, in my humble opinion, is mainly because it’s not meant to be edited in any way. It could be included in the Common project for example as it IS common.This...

Did you know that, when you create a native datasource in LightSwitch managing tables (entities) from the LightSwitch designer, the corresponding schema along with the data manipulated while debugging are stored in a SQL server database file set found in <ProjectName> \Bin\Data? These database files are attached to the local instance of SQL 2008 Express. Visual Studio LightSwitch will install one if not found. The SQL server instance must be configured to allow user instances, as by default LightSwitch will attach the aforementioned files as a user instance. Along with your schema, default ASP.NET security schema is also found there. The connection string compacting all the above can be found in the web.config file of the ServerGenerated project. If you don’t know what or where is this don’t worry we will talk about it in a next post. Just go ctrl+shift+F enter _IntrinsicData as the string to find and search in the entire solution. Please don’t touch. Generated, you know…...

Prerequisites Part 1 In this post we are going to enhance the State Machine module UI. Remember that along with all the usual XAF goodies we can now use Xpand code base which gives us a lot more options. Our StateMachineTransitionPermission has 2 lookups, StateMachineName and StateMachine. Our goal is to populate both of these cascading lookups without creating a platform specific module. StateMachineNames Creating lookups is a common scenario for which Xpand provides a set of property editors and controllers. By contrast with other business frameworks XAF allows maximum flexibility. Therefore in most cases we are able to code in such a generic way that everything could live in separate frameworks such as eXpand. Now, in order to populate the StateMachine name I am going to derive a new controller from a specialized abstract controller which is Xpand.ExpressApp.SystemModule.PopulateController<T>. This controller uses the PredefinedValues attribute of the XAF model. When filling the attribute with a set of...

A very useful action in Microsoft Word is that of text sorting. You select some rows of text and then use the icon “AZ” on the “Home" tab of Word’s ribbon UI. At the dialog that appears you usually would want to “Sort by: Paragraphs”, select “Type: Text” and choose whether you want to sort [...]...

The “Change Case” action (portrayed by an “Aa” icon) is a useful one that is usually not noticed by Microsoft Word 2010 users (although often sought for and not spotted by many – probably because somebody misnamed the respective ribbon tab as “Home” instead of “Edit”). It provides several options, the most useful being “UPPERCASE” [...]...

I’m sharing here an answer I just gave at: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3100251/can-i-run-matlab-on-windows-with-ui-just-that-the-code-runs-on-remote-server/7507515#7507515 for archiving, since this may interest fellow Roboticists Launching MATLAB on a server without the GUI is covered thoroughly at http://blogs.mathworks.com/desktop/2010/02/22/launching-matlab-without-the-desktop/ you should also read the user comments/discussion there e.g. you can use start matlab -nosplash -nodesktop -nojvm -minimize -r "testcommand, quit" if not using Java [...]...

I came across a useful Microsoft Support sample called “How to wait for a shelled application to finish by using Visual Basic 2005 or Visual Basic .NET” at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305368 However, note that there are several gotchas with the code supplied there (just informed Microsoft on that, hope they take notice). Also the article points to [...]...
